This is another New Zealand Native bird .... also known as the swamp hen. It isn't able to fly & lives around swampy areas, but lots of them can be seen on the verges along the Highways, where sadly they often get killed on the road. Usually seen in family groups.

It is a lovely bird & always lovely to see as we drive along. Thankfully, unlike some of our other beautiful native birds, at least this one is an endangered species.

An unusual bird and so colourful. A mini emu comes to mind and with those legs I bet it runs fast too.
