I've never been over keen on Marigolds, but a friend gave me these seeds in July...so I planted them...and here is one of the first blooms...Surprisingly I like it, especially the fluffiness of the petals and brown centre, which compliments the flower....and they are tall too..

Must admit I was impressed myself...I think what makes them nicer is they're tall...more like a daisy...
Some are singles some doubles, and one or two are orange...:))

I think you are right....a bit of height makes a difference.

Also Scottish, the foliage is pale green, which stands out a bit...look more like smooth leafed Lettuce, I can't remember the name...:))
