Vigna Caracalla / Corkscrew Vine

Vigna Caracalla / Corkscrew Vine

New today, (gift from my oldest son) smells lovely. Not sure if it's going in the garden or as a pot plant to make sure it can survive the winter here....

Thanks Ph. As soon as I saw it....it was mine! (This does not count as "my one a week" as it was a gift) ;o)))

Stunning Alex!
Indoors for the winter I think.

Thanks Meanie.
It's suppose to survive ok down to 4C. It doesn't get that cold here. I will leave it in a pot for this year but outdoors by a south facing wall and the first sign of trouble it gets rushed indoors.

Lovely plant: a new one to me.

Thanks Rbtkew. New to me as well, will be very careful with it this winter.

This one has a very white flower. My neighbor has a huge snail vine in her front yard. The flowers are brighter blue than yours, though. It's a very, very, very, very vigorous growing vine! lol! :>)

I think this vine will be perfectly hardy in your climate, too.

I'm afraid to plant it in the garden....I will wait this winter and if it is perfectly hardy, in the garden it goes.
Yes, I can tell it's very vigorous. It's growning fast even in a pot....and I've only had it for days.

It's a very commonly available vine here in CA. It can grow too fast for many gardens, though.

Not very common here so I'm making sure it's going to be around . I need to cover my back fence, this will be perfect then. The new flower today is really more of a purple white...

That's surprising! This vine is very widely grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, also.

It would be very good to cover your whole fence in a year or so.

Wow...that is fast. I have planted three passion flowers, six clematis and three (can't remember the name) climber along this fence. This will take over wont' it??? It is a gorgeous vine though. Is it easy to make new plants from cuttings?

4 Oct, 2011

Wow! You have some very aggressive-growing vines there.

I believe the snail vine should grow easily from cuttings.

4 Oct, 2011

I'm going to try a cutting first and only when I have a back up plant will I plant it in the garden.

I need to cover the fence...I don't want to be looking at my neighbours 6' weeds!!!

4 Oct, 2011

That's a good idea...always have a backup. :)

I wouldn't want to look at 6' weeds, either.

5 Oct, 2011

I'm thinking....I'm going to need a 6' fence in height!!! lol lol
This guy has reeds growing on his property....they reach my balcony, I had to snap a few with my hands today...argh

I typically don't like reed plants. They tend to be extremely invasive here.

I have planted some sugar cane my friend gave me this year. It's already started to multiple, I want to keep it to only 3 stems. By year the stems should be ready to pick.

These are the wild reeds I'm on about. They will take over the world if they could! They are massive, yuk.

At the rate you're going you won't need to go to the shops. lol. How much sugar will you get out of 3 stems?

6 Oct, 2011

Yes, wild reed is the worst! They take over the canyon area with Agave americana, pampas grass, Eucalyptus, Washingtonia robusta (Mexican Fan Palm), and Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm)...well, these are a few of the many invasive plants.

I'm not sure, I've never grown sugar cane before. I used to chew on the stems....however, as far as extracting the sugar, I'll have to read up on it. :>)

Superb..!

Thank you Rayd2b.....I really like it.

I have a few Passionfruits growing along my fence.

I love this vine as well. I'm keeping it protected this winter to see how it goes. Planting it in the garden in spring.
I fell in love with it when I saw this flower and it smells sooo nice.
