Thanks Plantoholic. I have a look at the flowers every time I walk past it.

Very pretty & exotic-looking. I'm not at all familiar with this plant, so it may not be available in NZ.

Whey hey!

Dwyllis,
I ordered the seeds from the U.S. Haven't seen it on sale here either. I saw a picture Meanie posted last year and had to have it!!!

Meanie,
About time hey? I keep checking the plant to see if any new buds are forming. The other one has done nothing yet. I've taken a cutting and stuck it in water as I read on the net that Clerodendrons are very easy to root in water. We'll see.

They're easy peasy Alex!
As they grow so fast, cut as large a section of green stem as you can, root it and pot up, then about a month later you should be able to take about 8 to 10cm from the top of that cutting too. Two cuttings from one!

Yes, it's a very easy plant to grow from cuttings. Cuttings usually produce roots within a couple of weeks.

I have a cutting in water....I can see roots and it's only been maybe a week.

I have cuttings from the cutting of a cutting on the go!

That's so funny....but reassuring.
I really want to plant one in the garden but I will probably wait for spring. Need to have loads of back-up plants.

A cutting of a cutting of a cutting of a cutting of a cutting! lol! :>)

ha ha ha ha ha ha ...that was a nice one hey. ;o)))

Seriously now, do you think I can plant one in the garden now or wait until spring?

Based on my observation on plants I've seen growing in some frost-prone areas of the San Francisco Bay Area...I think you're not going to have any problems growing it outdoors. Of course, the plant will be hardier, if planted in the ground than in a pot.

Here's a thread of interest:

True, but a pot can be moved indoors! One will be planted in the garden tomorrow.

I actually had a look at this thread last winter when the plant was just a small seedling.

Just take a lot of cuttings. lol! :>) You'll have more than enough back up (which I doubt you'll need in your climate). Remember: you don't live in Fairbanks, Alaska. LOL! :>)

Lol....brrrrrr

I will post a pic of this plant in the garden.

It's feeling like Fairbanks, AK here today (lol!)...we're having a huge storm in San Diego today. It's a very, very rare out of season storm. Strong winds, heavy rains and cooler than normal temps. I don't ever remember such a big storm this early in the season here in San Diego (it's very starnge!).

It's nice to have the rain in our rain-starved climate, though.

We're due for some rain over the week-end. We need it in our rain-starved climate as well. I really hate when you can see a nice storm coming in and then the wind just sends it the other way!! A lot of weirdness all over the world.

I hope you get your rain...it's always so nice after it rains: so clean and fresh.

I think I heard on the news the high temps here were the lowest highs recorded for the date...and the rain was the most recorded for the date, also. It's really crazy!
However, with all this being said: this weekend is suppose to be warm, up to around 85ºF/29ºC., which is around normal temps (inland)...and then even hotter temps for the middle of next week. What's so strange is that San Diego's climate is statically very stable and even...it typically doesn't fluctuate much throughout the year (it hasn't been normal for the last year and half).
