Thanks everyone. I have had a good harvest this year. They are so worth growing, my kitchen has not been without a large jug of these all year. I will miss them in the winter. I've given Maureen some seed to start me off again next year - she loves growing them! I like this colour too Pimpernel, its a species one I think.

Think I'll leave that to you Ml! - I'll send you some next year!

I just spotted these PL. I can smell them from here. I sowed some sweet pea seeds outside in the greenhouse which have not come through yet and fearing I might have lost them I sowed 20 in a each of 2 pots in the kitchen on 29.1.12 and they are coming through some already an inch high. Both are 'Old Fashioned Mixed' like Cupani which tend to have smaller flowers but better scent than any others I have grown. I have had mixed fortunes with sowing sweet peas and often end up buying a pot of seedlings. Keeping them in the heat at this time of year seems to be working. I bought the seeds in Aldi at only 39p for a packet of 20+ seeds. The only compost I had handy which was not frozen was some left over cactus compost and they seem to like it.

Dont you find thats always the way Scotsgran? Everything you desperately want to grow - becomes difficult!! I sow 3 or 4 batches throughout the year. I usually start them off in toilet roll tubes and then plant them out when they are just beginning to get going. I have started them off inside but find they get a bit leggy if youre not careful. Pinch the tops out soon and you will bet a better, stronger, bushier seedling. Really not difficult and really very hardy. I have some seedlings in my cold greenhouse right now. It is covered with snow!!
I think my problem stems more from killing things with kindness. Hope yours do well for you.

My seeds continue to sprout so I am really pleased with them. I will nip them as soon as they have a few leaves open. I sowed 20 Dierama seeds at the same time and they are sprouting too.
For the first time I spotted Dwarf mixed sweet pea seeds in Lidl yesterday. It said enough for 10 plants so I bought 8 packets think I could use them to fill my hanging baskets. When I went to sow them, the first packet had 40 seeds in it. I am wondering if they do not germinate well? Have you grown them.
I don't like the sound of your snow. I thought it was the south east that had snow.

I have never grown the dwarf sweet peas but I like your idea of growing them in hanging baskets. Your garden will be filled with perfume! If you are worried about germination, you could try starting them off by soaking them in lukewarm water just to break the seedcase. You are supposed to do it for about an hour before sowing. However I left them overnight once and got really good germination. You shouldnt have any problems. Keep my fingers crossed for you anyway.
You are right about the snow, it is in the southeast - where I live (Kent).

I will soak the seeds first as it does give them a start. I thought you lived in Cheshire for some reason. The packet says dwarf but I'm not sure if that means as in 2' high or as in 8" high so I am looking forward to seeing what comes out. I can't resist a bargain and at two packets for 50p I have to be a winner. Take care when you are out and about.
