Red Squirrel

Red Squirrel

Pic taken earlier this year in a local conifer (Scots Pine) wood. Just thought that this might show the real difference between these and Grey Squirrels, which always show some "red" in parts. :-))

This squirrel was about 50ft above, in a Scots Pine. The noise it was creating, cracking open the cones for the seeds, alerted me to it.This was taken in a local wood earlier this year. At the present time, they can be seen more frequently on the ground, as they bury their winter stores. Even on the ground, though, they are much more timid than the "Greys", and have still to get a good pic of them. :-))

I remember the first time I saw one...in the Lake District. Ambleside...walking along the woodland beside the stream and waterfalls...I looked up and one was sitting right in front of my face! Wonderful....unforgettable! :) My favourite animal in the whole world!

Beautiful. Well done David for getting a snap of this one, as I know there are not a lot of them about anymore.

The first time I saw one was in the lake district as well , they have a breeding programme at Pensthorpe here in Norfolk I believe they are releasing them on the Isle of Anglsey ...

Well caught, David, great photo. I went to the Isle of Wight hoping to see a red squirrel and wasn't disappointed - as we drove off the ferry, just along the road, one ran across in front of us. Lovely to see :)

Glad you like the pic, folks, even if I had to edit it heavily. I often drop the kids off at school in the morning, then make the 10mins drive to this woodland. Am never disappointed, and getting a good pic is way up high on my "wishlist". :-))

Last week, 2 of them dived for cover when I drove into the carpark, before I even had the camera switched on. :-)).

Red Squirrels in NW England were suffering from the deadly virus recently, I read earlier this year, but, hopefully, this has been contained.

Visited the Pensthorpe website, Amy, and the red Squirrel page is full of interesting info. Also mentions Brownsea Island, Anglesey and the Isle of Wight, too.
:-))
