Find out (as I want one)!

Very nice photo! This is a common shrub here. It's Jatropha integerrima - Spicy Jathropha. It's one of the easiest shrubs to grow...and very drought tolerant. This plant is very toxic like all the other Jathropha species, also.

This shrub is extremely easy to grow from cuttings. The cutting should callous over first, though.

Callous over?

Meanie:

Callous over: means to dry out for 3 - 5 days (or sometimes longer). The cutting should dry out because if you plant certain cuttings if they don't dry out for a while (like Plumeria) they rot when planted.

Thanks for the explanation!
I may try this method with my Salvia discolor..........

Aaahh...poisonous...that may explain the death of the little monkey, then... :(

Meanie:

You're welcome!

Karenfranceafrica:

Yes, the seeds of all Jathropha species are extremely poisonous!

It's in my friend's garden - she moved there with a little monkey and built it a house in the tree. Shortly afterwards the monkey died...I expect that's what it was, then... :(

It's highly likely. This shrub should not be grown where kids or animals may potentially eat the seeds!

Oh! Her little puppy (Fang's brother) died at the weekend too...but I don't think that it can have any seeds yet?

12 Dec, 2011

You'd be surprised. The seeds are small.

O dear...Thanks for that info, Delonix. I think I should tell her...before she gets another animal...
