Herewith the second astilbe pic. Also Mr Heron who is not at all useful in protecting the frogs in the pond against the local heron who often flies in for a breakfast frog-snack. One morning we were sitting quietly on the bench when in flew this huge heron for a snack. He got the shock of his life when he spotted us and after much flapping of wings was able to clear the hedge to beat a hasty retreat :o)

Thank you both. I had hoped it would look good but the plants have really excelled themselves.
It is not always plain sailing though. A friend gave me bit of bamboo which I planted in a lovely open space just behind where I am standing with the camera. It did well for about 5 years when I started noticing little bamboo shoots popping up in the borders. Knowing how sharp the growing spike of the bamboo root is I was concerned it didn't reach the pond liner, so I started excavating the roots of the bamboo. It had put on incredible growth, one bit was found growing about 30ft from the main plant. Another root had got to the pond and luckily had been stopped by the underlay and was now growing up along and underneath the liner. I had to dig up half the garden to get rid of the bamboo, and all my friends now have bits...plus the warning of how invasive it can be :o)
