Flowering Cacti

Flowering Cacti

This Cacti was given to me about 16 years ago by Auntie Celia who in those days was my gardening guru! (sadly she is no longer with us) It had never flowered for her but she gave me a cutting in the hope that I might have some luck. A couple of years ago I decided it might be far too cold in the conservatory during the winter months, so I brought it into a very bright and sunny shower room. Guess what that summer it flowered! I thought the flower was spectacular - it didn't last long just one day. But I was dead chuffed and thought I had it sorted. Guess what - it didn't flower last summer!

Thanks both of you - It was worth the wait and I'm sure Auntie Celia would be chuffed at my long awaited result!

Hi Petal Tracey, Good to see you have managed to load some photos. Looks like it was well worth the wait for this to flower. Some cacti only flower every few years. I hope you dont have to wait that long. Perhaps Hywel can cast some light on it for you.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm afraid I haven't been at all kind to this one in the past!! Thinking about it I've got another elderly prickly cacti which is in the Conservatory. I've had it - (don't laugh) nearly 30 years. It has moved home at least 5 times and flowered about 3 times in all - The last time was last Summer!!

I think it may be a Nightblooming cereus They bloom after dark and Fade in the morning..Suposed to be very fragrant. Bob flowerdew mentioned them a few months back..His advice was to stick them in a warm steamy bathroom.....Just as you did.

WOW !

It's beautiful. I would say it's a type of Phyllocactus, from the flattened stems. It needs plenty of light, and a warmish place. It originates from tropical forest areas, so try to make sure it doesn't dry out too much. It should flower every year.
Thanks for showing it. I love cacti, (whether they flower or not) and I think this one is beautiful :o)

Thanks for all the lovely comments - This was one of the first photo's that I've put on GoY! I'm surprised at the number of comments and "likes".
To be honest the photo proberly doesn't do the flower justice! It's difficult trying to get a good pic of a white flower hanging from the top of the medicine cupboard! I'll try and give it more tlc from now on in hope of flowers this year!
Just off to water it now - I'm sure it'll be bone dry... !!
