Small bulb for well-drained (but not dry) soil in full sun. Only two or three inches high so an alpine bed or pot is probably the best place to grow it

lovely collor,
googled alpine bed, have to ask you if it is related to the arrange of the soil with some rocks?

Aleyna - in the UK, an alpine bed is what we call somewhere we can grow plants from mountain regions. Many of these need free-draining, gritty soil, often with a few rocks in the area where they can get some moisture. From the nineteenth century, keen gardeners would build rockeries in an attempt to mimic these conditions; now we tend to call them alpine beds (which may or may not contain rocks as well).
If you look at my old blogs, there is one called "Plants At Altitude" (from September 2009 I think), showing how my alpine bed was made. The following May, I wrote another one "Alpines - Then and Now" to show how the new bed was progressing.
As we have winters in the UK with alternating spells of cold, dry weather and milder, wetter spells, we have to give some of these mountain plants protection (in the wild, they would often be covered in snow so any mild spells would not affect them until spring). "Glassing It Over", written last December, shows how we can manage this.

this has gone straight into my faves, thanks, Andrew. I'd never heard of it before - I've seen your "glassing" blog but I'll have to go through your other blogs for more info, advice and general how-to-ness
