Hoffmania refulgens

Hoffmania refulgens (Hoffmania refulgens)

My Hoffmania is blooming for the first time ever. It has very interesting small flowers along the trunks. This very tropical rain forest plant isn't too commonly grown here in San Diego, CA. Although, it's becoming increasing more popular. Photo taken Mar. 5, 2012.

Nice flowers. I checked your old picture to see what the plant looks like. I guess it's outside now.

Yes, it's been outside for at least 3 years. I tried to grow it indoors for a while (because I was told it wasn't hardy here in San Diego), however, all the leaves started falling off.

How can it not be hardy for San Diego????

Alexandramou:

Yes, some plants are even too tropical for San Diego's subtropical climate. This one does grow well outside in a shaded area, out of direct sun. It's native to deep low-land tropical rain forest.

Plathoholic:

I believe, I purchased it back in 2008. I originally had it indoors (for about a month), which it absolutely hated!

Milky:

The flowers are pretty amazing! I never thought it would flower in San Diego's dry subtropical climate.

A DRY subtropical climate sounds really really good!!!

Alexandramou:

It is very good most of the time. The rainfall this year is well below normal. We've had less than half the normal rainfall to date.

Yesterday the temps were cool after all the hot weather, we've had...then tomorrow it's going to get warm again. It's like a roller coaster. This is pretty typical of late winter, early spring.
