The Golden Trumpet trees are not quite in full bloom, yet. Photo taken March 7, 2012 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

Most of them don't have a scent.

That's a shame.....can you imagine what it would feel like walking under all those trees (if they had a scent)....wow.

The Hong Kong Orchid trees are all still in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous!!! They have a very sweet fragrance. Many Michaelia species are blooming, also...and they are among the most sweetly fragrant trees in the world. You should try a Michelia doltsopa or figo...they're very hardy. My absolute favorite is Michelia champaca and its variety alba. (it's so sweet you want to eat the tree. lol) However, this tree is very tender to the slightest cold (it's very widely grown here and the San Francisco Bay Area) It gets very badly damaged in the SF Bay Area if temps go down to freezing (even for a little while). They seem to recover very quickly, though...as it's a very fast growing tree. Temps below freezing can even kill a very large tree to the ground.

The previous comment was posted by me. Not sure why it's posted under Iciar screen name. It's very strange. I know this has happened to Meanie in the past...it's the first time for me, though. :>/

I was scratching my head thinking......how could these trees live in London!!!

Wow, wow , wow .....these trees are gorgeous!!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing you really like the Michaelia species?
Michaelia doltsopa grows very large in the San Francisco Bay Area (especially closer to the coast)...it likes the climate up there better than in San Diego.
M. doltsopa generally is in full bloom in January.

LOL.....
I sowed seeds for Michelia champaca last year. Nothing. My favorite as well.
Found some seeds for Michelia doltsopa (from India). Thinking about it.
Would love the Champaca though!

M. champaca and alba has some of the most tropical-looking, beautiful shiny leaves. I need to take some photos of this tree. Many trees are in people's yards, though.
It's too bad it's such a tender tree...because it grows best in the ground, due to it's large root system.

Yeah,,,,,just rub it in why don't you. ;o)))
At least I have you to take pictures of gorgeous trees I can't grow here.

Not sure how available Michaelia species/hybrids are there?
There's so many hardy hybrids which have become available over the last 12 years or so.
