I've waited five long years for this to throw another flower out!
I had given up again for the year and had withdrawn water. So I was over the moon to see this this morning!

Stuff the pizza - this is a really big event! Could warrant a Calzone pizza by way of a celebration!

How exciting for you I won't mention food LOL ... wasn't Chico in the " skating on Ice programme " , I shall be looking out for the photo of it ' In Bloom '

Sorry meanie, I did think it was fantastic after waiting all that time and I will look forward to the flower - maybe in your new house?

Oh Meanie I have laughed so much at your comment to Sticki, stuff the pizza, Brilliant,
17 Mar, 2012
This is what it should look like.............

When I said stuff the pizza I was inspired - Calzone pizza!
17 Mar, 2012
Brilliant, obviously you did the right thing!!

I've been doing the same thing for years DD. Surreylad told me that this one really needs a spell in the fridge, so maybe it was the threat of that!
17 Mar, 2012
Lol it could be Meanie, it's looking promising ...
17 Mar, 2012
It's certainly buds SL! It had been without water for about three weeks too, ready for the house move (and it's time in the fridge!).
17 Mar, 2012
that's good news can't wait for the flower pics now... how's the move going are you all packed ready ?
17 Mar, 2012
All the non important stuff is packed.
Fortunately I'm leaving a fair bit of the furniture for the new owner, so that's one less hassle.
17 Mar, 2012
excellent.. good luck with the move..

Fascinating flower!
Btw I did notice the very clever stuffed pizza!
18 Mar, 2012
Thanks SL.
Very nice it was too Sticki - went Piggy stylie!
18 Mar, 2012

Meanie:
You're very patient! I would have thrown it in the trash a long time ago. lol! :>)

It came very close several times Delonix!

Luckily here Hippeastrum species and hybrids grow and bloom outdoors freely.
25 Mar, 2012
Although this is one of the cooler growing ones (apparently), no chance of outdoor growing here.............
25 Mar, 2012
Hippeastrum is one of my favorite bulbs! The flowers on most are absolutely beautiful!
I never though of them as being cooler-growing bulbs, as most are native to the tropics.
25 Mar, 2012
After much research this was going in the fridge after the house move - it's what usually works apparently!
25 Mar, 2012
Are you sure you need to put into the fridge? I never thought Hippeastrum needed chilling.
25 Mar, 2012
Apparently so - they can be a little stroppy about blooming apparently. It's native to the higher elevations of Argentina and Bolivia.
25 Mar, 2012
Okay, that's the reason. I know many are native to the tropics and need to no chilling (the ones we grow here, anyway).
26 Mar, 2012
It's strange, because to my eyes this is super tropical looking!!
26 Mar, 2012
Sometimes looks can be deceiving.
27 Mar, 2012
I'm getting excited about this now - the flower stem stands 40cm tall already!
28 Mar, 2012
That's great! Soon it'll be blooming.
