Lush front garden

This lush front garden opposite to where my youngest son lives in Hastings, Hawkes Bay, NZ looked so green & refreshing on a hot day, & I love that NZ native tree fern. I hope the one I planted a few months ago in my backyard, grows as well over the coming years.

I am so tempted to give a Dicksonia a go in my new garden. I already have a couple of Clianthus and a Metrosideros to start off a little New Zealand corner.

I love the Dicksonia, M. Mine has been planted in a relatively shady corner which only really gets late afternoon sun, & is next to a cabbage tree (cordyline), like the one showing in photo, but nowhere near as big yet. I am really hoping it will do well. At the moment the leaves are looking a bit brown, but we are coming into autumn, so maybe that is normal. Good luck with your NZ corner ..... would love to see pics of it as it progresses. My Clianthus is finally showing signs of growing. For about 3 months it seemed to do nothing at all, but bigger now. I don't have a Metrosideros in yet, but will certainly be putting one in somewhere.

I'm looking for seeds for the holy grail of NZ plants - Tecomanthe speciosa.

I also have Fuchsia procumbens and perscandens

Dwyllis:

Your New Zealand Black Tree Fern (Cyathea medullaris) is gorgeous! It is literally my favorite tree fern. There's many in the San Francisco Bay Area. There's many here in San Diego, also. However, they grow so much lusher up north in The San Francisco Bay Area and get very tall with gigantic crowns. I have old still photos of this tree fern naturalizing in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Meanie:

Would Tecomanthe speciosa grow there, outdoors? It's available here. However, it a pretty tender vine and is very vigorous.

Delonix ... I will be in San Fransisco in first week in August, so will be very interested in seeing what is growing there.

Dwyllis:

San Francisco Botanical Gardens (FKA: Strybing Arboretum) has some very interesting plants from all over the world. Many plants from higher elevations of the tropics thrive in the climate. African Linden (Sparmannia africana) grows by the millions in Golden Gate Park. It naturalized there many years ago.
