Manawatu Gorge landslide

Manawatu Gorge landslide

This photo was taken four days ago, after rain on Monday night brought down another 20,000 cubic metres of rubble, in an area which had just taken several weeks to clear. Over eight million NZ$ has been spent since August last year, trying to re-open this major route through the Manawatu Gorge.

Oh that's awfull.
I remember a landslide near where my gran lived here in Wales, when I was little. Several houses got swept away ... and they had to build a new road.

Pimpernell ... yes, this is the same spot, but they had only cleared up part of the landslide on the highway when suddenly a whole lot more came down & covered all the weeks of work they had done. The entire hillside is so unstable ... they wouldn't get me anywhere near it! I think everyone is just holding their breath, waiting for the first fatality ... thank goodness that so far no-one has been badly hurt.

I don't blame you at all Dwyllis, better to have a longer journey than risk tragedy. That entire slope must be at risk..? Dread to think what it is doing to the ecology of the river.

Sounds to me very strange, they invest so much money into sinking slope. Wasting time, money and lives. Looking on this picture - it can repeat sooner or later. This issue requires some Japan or Italian architect, they are perfect in building bridges and highways on moving grounds :)

Wow! That's incredible! Mother Nature always wins.

We drove through the gorge a few weeks ago, when it re-opened. Only one side of the road was open then. Haven't been through it since, so not sure how it is now.
