Unfortunately, Motinot. That is a big business and plague. Lot of fertile land is used for these plants which are used mainly for petrol business and the land for wheat and other cereals is shrinking. I saw a horrible model of famine caused by this behaviour. This plant depletes the soil and has not so high nutritive value as wheat.

Thanks ,It makes even a dull day look sunny ,
Kat if you grow it continually on the same land it will deplete the soil but in this country it is grown on a 3 year rotation system with other crops so that the soil doesn't suffer it is mainly used for oil .
the Pollen is a nuisance to many people who suffer from Hay fever ..

A wonderful picture Amy, reminds me of when we lived at Rabbit Lane, Polly was just a puppy and she got under the fence into the field and it took me ages to get her to come out , I have a picture somewhere will see if I can find it and put it on for you ;0))

Ours is just beginning to show colour so you're ahead of us. I like to see the bright colour but don't like the smell although I no longer suffer from hay fever. Once when driving to work with rape seed fields on either side of me I stopped because I thought my car was 'burning'. Took me a while to realise where the smell was coming from :)

It does have a strong smell Gill , I can see that it could smell like burning , I suffer from hay fever so wouldn't want to live to close to a field .

Good morning to all with allergies, here is one of the earliest studies proving oil seed rape is inducer of allergies.
Next time, those who have allergies, do not stop at these fields, leave it as fast as possible.

Thanks Kat , there's lots of interesting infomation there , I believe that the crops are about to become less viable because they will not be allowed to use certain pesticides if that happens the crops won't be able to compete with the weeds resulting in very poor seed to extract the oil .. the farmers here are paid to leave a strip round the fields measuring approx 3 metres for the wild life ...

Sounds like safety zone to me :) :)
