That is great news about the conifers Paul as it will makes a great difference to how things grow in your garden.

Thanks DRC - not sure but I am thinking the conifers were getting to his sewers !!

You don't realise how much light they block until they're gone - I know, we had six in the back garden when we moved here

indeed Sheilar - it may help garden now :))))))))))

We found we could grow lots more plants that previously the conifers prevented us from growing as they not only block the light, but take all the water too!! ;-))

Have to giggle...we had a neighbour at the old house...had leylandii hedge at the bottom. The people on the other side had all their sun blocked out! When new neighbours moved in, they cut the whole lot down. The people on the other side complained bitterly because they could now see their neighbours!!! There's no pleasing some people!

Could you tell me please, is that gravell cemented in, or is it loose. I am interested because I have thought of doing a similar thing in a part of my garden .... Thank you :o)

Thank you Just Dawn :)))))))))))- amazing how sunlight makes things look better too :))))))))))))
Thanks Pixi and Surreylad :)))))))
Hi Hywel - when I removed the grass I got a flat piece of wood and pressed down hard to compact the soil then on a good dry day layered the gravel on it as it was - it sits on the soil better than thought maybe have to add a couple of bags of gravel once a year and becoming less as it compacts - I don't go for blanket weed - it smells because it holds lots of water - you could cement it but could be expensive unless you have lots of slabs to put down first and fill the gaps :)))))))))))))))

Your garden looks really good Paul, well done.
The conifers don't only take the light but also the water and nutrients from the soil and make it very dry. I don't think people realise how quickly lliandi grow. Much nicer to have different tall shrubs with flowers if they want a bit of privacy.
