Where I grew up, people (like my grandad) planted one each side of the gate, and made arches...beautiful...

...full of birds' nests in spring...
...and protects your threshold from black witches - they cannot cross under...

So, it's a really 'good luck' and 'good looking' little tree!
(just don't hang your washing under it when it's in berry - the stains from the bird poo don't come out!!!!!!) :)))
