Tsalapetinos sounds more like their name :)))
Hoopoe evokes American Indians in my mind.

I like his beak and his coloring. And i also love Greece. My husband's aunt started Day Nurseries in some part of Greece. She used to spend six months every year in Athens. By the time she died, she had visited all of Greece and had many friends there.

I always hoped we would see a Hoopooe when we had holidays in Greece, but we never saw one at all:(
I remember hearing nightingales though, one year in Stoupa ( I think that was on Peleponese) & one year in Skiathos. So beautiful, I have never heard them in England.
A lasting memory for me when were in Corfu was to see millions of fireflies among the olive trees at night, twinkling like stars - sooooo beautiful!
When we went back there another year the olive grove had gone & new bars & hotels were built there - such a shame - ruined it for me!!!!

:)) How is the weather there in October/November?

Beautiful bird. Is it a native of Greece, or just visiting? I spent six years living in West Africa, The Gambia & we had some amazing birds migrating to The Gambia from many different countries to find the warmer weather. We are lucky in NZ ( my birthplace), to have many beautiful native birds which are found nowhere else in the world. Sadly, due to predators introduced in the 1800s, we have lost & are losing a lot of our native birds to extinction. Nowadays, there are conservation programmes to save those species most at risk.

We called in at Ouranoupolis one year when we went on a boat trip around the area. There wasn't a lot there then. I expect it has changed a lot, like everywhere else where tourists go! We had a look at Athos but of course couldn't visit.

Thanks on your comment Dwyllis. Protect natives please.it is wealth for a country.
Shirlwirl what year you visit ouranoupolis?

What a beautiful bird. I do not know the English name, but know it in my language. They are now rare in Slovakia. What about Greece?
