This one is actually a species of Bauhinia. My neighbor has a gigantic one which blooms all year. I got a seedling last year...it bloomed within 4 months.
Many Bauhinia species grow as a very common street trees here in San Diego. Hong Kong Orchid tree (Bauhinia x blakeana) is probably the most common street tree here because it doesn't produce the messy seed pods.

Yes, I agree with you. I absolutely love Hong Kong Orchid trees! They are the one of the few Bauhinia that has a wonderfully fragrant flower! I'm so glad they're very widely grown here. My neighbor just planted 4 or 5 trees a couple of years ago. I can see them from my back windows.
