thats lovely kathy, i found out i have a geranium but dont know what the flowers are like. do you know whether i could divide it r should i take a cutting? :-)

21 Jun, 2012

Most can be divided Leigh, and some can be rooted from cuttings, this one spreads by tiny little bulb like rhizomes which you can just dig up and plant were you like, some like macrorhizum can be propogated by just sticking bits of the rhizome in compost and they root,I grew quite a few varieties from seed too, they're best divided in autumn or early spring, post a picture when it flowers and I'll see if I recognise it ,if not sure someone on here'll know the variety and advise :-)

Gosh ive just been reading up on cuttings and it sounds really complicated :o/ i suppose the more i do the more itll sink in :o)

24 Jun, 2012

Its much easier than it sounds Leigh :-), you'll be doing it without thinking in no time,I took some cuttings from my geranium macrorhizum last autumn, just stuck pieces in pots of compost they all rooted and are now planted out in the garden and flowering, lots of new plants for free :-))

So if i were to take some now and put them in the greenhouse would they grow for next year? do you really need to use that hormone powder stuff or is that just for harder to root plants? :o)

24 Jun, 2012

I take mine end of August early September time and no I don't use hormone rooting powder, as you say probably best to use for harder to root plants but geraniums root really easily :-))

Oops i think i might have killed it. i just couldnt wait while i was clearing the bed earlier, i dug it up and moved the big bits to the other side of the path. theres still a clump there so that might recover. im too impatient! :-(
