Yes, it is a "he"...thanks sticki. The female is a soft brown colour. I have a pair of them but haven't been able to get a shot of her. I can hear her calling as she enjoys the berries on the shrub near the garden.

the little jewel in your wild meadow! he is a stunner, what is his call like? he has to be fairly small to balance on the grass stalk, i will look him up

What a lovely little bird, and such a long migration......oh the wonders of nature. Years ago we used to have flocks of swallows/swifts playing and calling in the evening sky before roosting. The other evening I counted a whole five of them...I was glad and sad at the same time.

According to what I've read, Dorjac, the male's feathers are actually black, and it is light which causes us to see the varying intensities of blue...from royal to turquoise.
also the feathers of the male become closer to the female in colour after mating...while they're rearing their young it wouldn't be good to be so conspicuous, I guess. :-)
Since the anti-spraying laws we are seeing more robins, and much more variety in some areas...but in others, there seem to be fewer and fewer every year...(house sparrows are fewer this year....I miss them.) swallows and swifts...are they also called linnets?....I love the W.B.Yeats poem "Isle of Innisfree" ...he talks about "linnet's wings"...lol.

Oh excellent! It's a pity I couldn't get a better pic of him...but on second thought, I was lucky to get the one I did...the grasses were swaying in the wind...and him with it... Amazing what you can find on Youtube aye?
