Daylily 'Sink into your Eyes'

Hey kathy, just catching up, havent been goying much last few days as i got my new 'bible' i ordered from the library-the new rhs encyclopedia of plants!! i found a daylilys and thought of you! then i found one called cathys sunset! have you got that one its lovely! :o)

Yes Leigh I do have Cathy's Sunset, had to have that one didn't I,lol, can't remember if I've put a picture on this year ?? a lovely small flowered bicolour with terracotta and yellow flowers.
You'll be busy reading then Leigh, can see you now with your pen and paper making lists of all the plants you want :-))
I bought one last year encyclopedia of daylilies over 1700 outstanding varieties, I want them all!!!!, even has a section of daylilies of the future the patterns are amazing,trouble is all the newer ones are really expensive and as most are bred in America there are all the phytosanitary costs involved in getting them over here :-( , thats why I'm growing some from seed, they're crosses of some of the expensive ones but seeds don't have to have the same checks as plants :-), I'm rambling again,lol.

I cant believe there are that many! i may have a slight chance of getting one you dont have lol to swap with you! ive been looking on ebay for some, mainly plants and expensive to get a few. mite buy one for time being and then cud i take cuttings and seeds ect? come on, your my dayliliy guru! :o)

There are over 50 000 registered cultivars in the USA Leigh!!!! can see I'll have to emigrate,lol, not that many available here, but the UK sellers do import some each year, they do usually trial them before they go on sale as not all perform as well in this country.
I've had some great plants off ebay, you have to know what you can buy the plants for from the uk sellers though as sometimes the Spiders and Unusual Forms(ufo's) can go for silly prices, I have a few favourite sellers I buy from regularly, my favourite being Polliesdaylilies as I love the spiders and she holds the national collection over 1500 varieties, she's also a member on here, lovely lady and great plants.
When you receive your plants they're usually one fan (look a bit like a leek)and they're sent out bare root which does no damage to the plant,they have very thick roots, some varieties increase really quickly and can become 4 or 5 fans within a year others are much slower in depends on the variety, to divide them you just dig up the whole plant wash the roots, if the clumps not too big, then you can pull them apart into individual fans, sometimes you may need to cut with a knife but you can usually see where they're joined, if the clumps huge you can just split with a couple of spades into 3 or 4 fan pieces,just remember not to plant too deeply as this can prevent flowering, they can be grown from seed but if you only have one variety its likely they'll be like the parent and take 2-3 years to flower from seed so its usually quicker to split the plants, if you have a few varieties you can cross pollinate them, then the possibilites are endless, each seed even if its from the same cross will be different, not all will be good plants but exciting, there are diploid and tetraploid daylilies each have a different number of chromosones so you can't cross a diploid with a tetraploid it has to be diploid with diploid nd tetraploid with tetraploid or they won't produce seed, there's a database that us daylily addicts use all the time which gives you all the information about each plant:

Another way that you can increase some plants is from proliferations, not all varieties produce these, I'll post a picture when I find some on my plants, its a small plantlet that grows along the flower scape (stalk)that can be potted up to make a new plant which will be just like the parent, they can take a couple of years to flower but plants for free :-), I had one on a plant last year that actually flowered on the plant!!!!, never had that before.
