A mystery butterfly on lavender in France

is that orange tip? when it opens its wings does it have an orange tip on part of its wings?

We get lots of butterflies that look very similar to this, but blacker and whiter than this - definitely no orange, and quite large. I always took them to be White Admirals, but they never settle with their wings open, so I can't get a good look at them. The upper wings are mostly black with strong white markings. They tend to flop around under the trees in the shade and come to drink when I have just been watering the garden, but I also find crowds of them on the lavender bushes. We also get quite a lot of your beautiful swallowtails, too.

Still a mystery! My husband, who took the photo, said that there was no orange on it at all. Perhaps it is the one you describe Gattina.

I don't know many butterflies, but we've had Orange Tips in the garden, and their undersides are very pretty mottled green and white (and only an orange tip on the male, as Sticki says). I THINK this one is a Marbled White!
