It's been a struggle,Carole..they are so top heavy..had to cut one spike off..I hated doing that .. but thank you, they have done well,considering..:o)

It has been difficult Sandra, I have had to cut quite a few Foxgloves for the same reasons and Roses that have become waterlogged too. Now the Sweet Peas are blooming I am cutting them too each day too, running out of vases lol

Such a shame isnt it, that the rain is spoiling it all, but they look good Sandra.

Well done keeping them upright!

Thanks guys..I ran out of canes for these..used so many on other plants..lots of garden twine in there somewhere :o)...I hope yours do flower for you,Jane...are there any signs of flower spikes ? I'm sure my first year with these didn't produce much....they like to be well fed ,and I know they will have had lots of water ! Lol...although I have still watered mine occasionally,as the leaf canopy is so dense,it didn't always get to the roots...just a thought..

Lol,Paul..never thought of that song :o)..thank you,and yes,Lychnis..a cheapo from Lidl, many years ago..got a few now,as they split so easily, don't they?..Rose is called Fragrant Delight, and background shrub is Weigela Florida..
not as many flowers this year, but lots of growth ...

just came back onto Goy after long break - love the Lychnis really glows :D Weigela Florida is lovely our garden centres do not do very healthy ones this year :(

No Bloomer, no flower spikes at all, just a few leaves breaking through. They have had plenty of water and the soil is pretty good, also do occasionally water with tom feed. It's their 2nd year, so maybe just establishing. I did think slugs, but well pelleted. Jx

Just wonder if it's your soil then,Jane ? I used to grow salad potatos's in that small border..till I ran out of new places to grow them:o) .so there was lots of home made compost dug in there to start with, and I mulch them with a thick layer every Autumn,to keep them well protected for winter..also dig in 'Slug gone' about february, before the eggs emerge, and some more when the plants start to show..it is a fertiliser as well..hope this helps ..x

Thanks Bloomer. It's not the soil - well I don't think so. It's a new bed, Mick built it 4 years ago and it was filled with river valley bottom alluvial soil. Added to which, being where we are, we have a ready suply of compost. So the soil is pretty rich. A lot of my things are late this year. Think it must be the weather. I did get these plants of a market stall last year. Wonder if they're just not very good plants? Jx

Ah,well that narrows it down Jane..they might show then...and seems like we might be getting some summer next week ? I won't get too excited just yet :o)
16 Jul, 2012
Er, perhaps wise to reign your enthusiasm in for a little while longer Bloomer. Don't want you getting over excited now............... :-)
16 Jul, 2012
Lol,Jane..I am very cynical these days, and believe it when it happens ! :o)
16 Jul, 2012
Ummm, I think this summer has had that effect on most of us. Worst one I can ever remember. Jx
16 Jul, 2012
Me too..we've just kinda got resigned to it now, haven't
we? ..hang on! that yellow thing has just appeared ..
yikes ! :o)

Blimey riley, what are you on? You are obviously halucinating. :-)
16 Jul, 2012
It's ok Jane..it was only a fleeting sight...didn't get time to get on a high,so didn't need to have the downer ! :o))

Been out to look at my delphies - or lack of them. Think it must be slugs, despite the pellets. Going out to lunch tomorrow with a friend and then on to twin locks garden centre in gargrave. It's a really lovely place. Need a massive tub for Rambling Rosie and think I might just get something to replace the failing delphinium. I will pot it up and put it in poorly plant hospital. Wandered round the garden a bit, and felt really fed up. My beautiful alstroemeras are looking a bit soggy and the slugs have eaten loads of plants. Nothing looks fab. Somethings look end of season ish or leggy and drawn.- I think cos of the weather. AND the WEEDS. About 2 days weeding to do. Feel a bit disheartened and not like doing anything. Heyho. AND given up wine for a week or two - putting on weight :-(

Oh my,you do seem down Jane..not surprising after all that's happened lately..Lunch with your friend will buck you up,and a visit to the GC too..see if you can find something that slugs don't like,as it is a constant battle...would you be better with hardy perennials or shrubs instead?...I suppose it's what you want, and where...anyway,,have a lovely day tomorrow, and hope you find something nice :o)....xxx
16 Jul, 2012
Thanks Bloomer will do. I like hardy perennials. Any suggestions? Jx
16 Jul, 2012
Just depends what you like or have room for really..but Hardy Lavender(Hidcote),,Sedum 'Brilliant' or 'Rosy Glow' are nice..Rudbeckias.'Goldsturm' or other varieties..Geums,etc....never had slugs on any of mine..well,they haven't eaten them, anyway ! Lol.....or even evergreen shrubs like some Euonymous...'Emerald and gold' ,'Silver Queen'.both slow growers but stay compact..nice to see in winter...so many Jane..but everyones taste is different,so you would easily find something suitable,I'm sure..just take your time to have a look around..or maybe google Hardy Perennials..or look on goypedia at the bottom..very helpful :o) X

Umm, food for thought. Can feel a tugging at my purse strings already! Thanks. Will let you know what I do get. Jx
