Honey Mango

Honey Mango

Turned over the compost heap earlier and found this Honey Mango had germinated. I poked it in there a month ago wondering if the heat from the heap would germinate it and then forgot all about it!

I thought that it was another damned spud peeling at first!

good job you had your eyes peeled for that one!!!

do you think it will produce fruit too ???

Back with the puns then Sticki!!

Doubt it very much, but if it ever did it would be the sweetest mango ever!

25 Aug, 2012

sounds really delicious!!!

25 Aug, 2012

They really are! Best mango of all.

25 Aug, 2012

so the one i buy in the shop is not likely to be this variety???

25 Aug, 2012

Unusual to find them in the mainstream s/markets - check out the Asian stores.

have to drive a bit further for one of those! but worth it i guess!

25 Aug, 2012

well done:)

It's not unusual to see them on the grocers stall at our local market either Sticki.

I did nothing (except forget about it) Kasy!!!!!

26 Aug, 2012

I think you must have a good Market!

Meanie:

You're very lucky this mango is polyembryonic. So, the seed will produce a tree identical to the parent. Also, this mango easily can stay a dwarf tree of 4 - 6 ft....and it can produce fruit in a 15 gallon container.

This mango is also called 'Manila'. It's the most widely sold and planted mango in California. It's pretty hardy and can be grown as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area. I had a nice tree (in the ground) which produced fruit up in Fremont, CA. (SF Bay Area).

We have a good grocer on our market Sticki!

You've made my day Delonix!

26 Aug, 2012

lucky you!!!

26 Aug, 2012

Meanie:

Mango trees typically need a tremendous amount of heat to get good fruit production. However, the Manila mango seems not need this kind of hot weather...this is why it's the best mango for growing along the California coast.

It just gets better!
This is a very expensive mango to buy over here.

27 Aug, 2012

Yes, one day you'll have a nice fruit-bearing mango tree! :>)

That's so strange. Manila or Honey (they're called champagne or Ataulfo, also) mangoes are usually very cheap here (many times 3 or $1.00). They're available in every store.

Box of four or five is a fiver here!

27 Aug, 2012

That doesn't seem too expensive. I know the locally grown Coachella Valley Kiett mangoes (which will be coming in to stores soon) cost $2 or $2.50 each. It's a huge mango, though (weighing 3 lbs or more). One of the best tasting varieties in the world, by many mango connoisseurs.

We will all be queuing up at your door when it grows into a big tree! How exciting. May it grow strong and fruity!

Found another today in the other heap Lulu! They seem very easy to germinate!

1 Sep, 2012

Meanie:

They germinate very quickly and easily. Remember: one polyembryonic mango seed can produce 3 to 7 plants.

1 Sep, 2012

That figures - the first one has another shoot poking up! What to do now?

1 Sep, 2012

Yes, you can separate them carefully. I've done this many times with mango and Rose Apple (Syzygium jambos). I've gotten up to 12 plants from one seed from the Rose Apple tree.

2 Sep, 2012

You will soon have a mango forest!

2 Sep, 2012

Damn - where will I keep them all!!!!

2 Sep, 2012

Meanie:

Young mango seedlings tend to grow very slowly outside a subtropical/tropical climate. They'll stay small (typically) for a long time.

3 Sep, 2012

Have you a heated greenhouse Meanie?!

3 Sep, 2012

Nobody seems to have told mine that Delonix!

I have yet to decide Lulu - most likely it'll just be frost free.

3 Sep, 2012

About how fast they grow? They won't continue to grow so fast...believe me. lol

4 Sep, 2012

They continue to germinate in the compost heap though! Five germinated now!

8 Sep, 2012

Wow! You eat a lot of mangoes, just like me.

That's great! Soon you'll have a mango grove.

8 Sep, 2012

I've kept two, but the rest will have to take their chances in the compost bin...............

8 Sep, 2012

Meanie:

You should sell them or give them away.

8 Sep, 2012

It's a thought!!!
