Thanks all this one is a new addition this year.
KF considering the wet spring it's been quite a good year for butterflies here :o)))

I didn't get any butterflies until August, Planto!

But there were ones I'd never seen before...they were beautiful!

Unfortunately, I also had orange hornets I'd also never seen before...

The Asian Hornet has reached my garden :(

The amazing thing is...my wee grandson picked one up in his hand...and it, somehow, decided just to give him a "warning" sting. It could've killed a one-year-old, but, it seems like it decided not to...it just did enough to make him cry and let it go...

How strange is that? :)

Sounds like a lucky escape, never seen an Asian Hornet, we have Hornets nesting in the barn down the lane but ours seem quite placid, I hope the Asian ones dont make it here!

It seems that they arrived in Bordeaux in a shipment of Chinese pottery, just a few years ago...and have quickly spread. This is the first year I've seen them, though. They seem more placid than our usual ones, but they do terrible damage to the bee population. The British authorities are worried about their spread, so if you do ever see one you have to inform them. They look much like european hornets, except they are slightly bigger and are orange where you would expect to see yellow.

I hope you never have any need of any of that information, Planto!

Thanks Dd :o)))

I must try growing these plants, are they difficult ?

21 Oct, 2012

Most of them are quite easy some of the weaker ones struggle in bad winters, this one seems a strong grower they grow best in some shade. :o)

Thanks...

DD - as PA says the trick is to work out just how much shade they need/like. The common T.formosana will take full sun (actually seems to like it), whilst other species or cultivars demand more shade. My T.ishiana ( http://bit.ly/XdblLz ) is very demanding of shade. They all demand plenty of moisture but winter wet will do for a few species (T.hirta really dislikes it).

Wherever possible I split new plants keeping one section in a pot for a year or two and moving it about. Small offsets taken in the spring provide strong back-up plants for the following year if reqd.
