Klahanie:
It can grow even larger and taller.

I wish mine was in my garden..... I have it in the ground but it doesn't have the room to grow this size. It now has three trunks. It would have had four but I gave one to my mom last year....

I have a few species of Alocasia. They don't do as well as when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. The bugs seem to always eat the tubers. My plants in the Bay Area grew so much faster, also. Not sure what that's about.

LOL...lol....lol...lol...lol...I mixed this up with my large Philodendron. Is this a sign? ;o))))
I do have an Alocasia in the garden and it's tiny compared to this!
Bugs. ;o(

My Alocasia macrorrhiza would grow to almost 8ft (2.5m) tall within two years in the San Francisco Bay Area.
My Alocasia 'Calidora' in the front yard is only about 5ft (1.5m) in two years. I have an Alocasia 'Portora' which did well for two years is not languishing. The leaves are tiny and it only has two leaves. It should have massive, beautiful leaves by now.

Hhmm.....
Mine is not growing as fast as I would like.....even with all this crazy heat we've had. By the way....it's still hot here,,,,very unusual for this time of the year.

My previous comment was not correct. lol! I must have been very tired.
I meant to say: My Alocasia "portora' did well the first two or three years. The last couple of years it hasn't grown much and looks terrible. I may have to move into a little more light.
Here's what it used to look like last year:

The last two days it's only been around 80ºF (27ºC), which is perfectly fine with me. I'm so over the very hot weather!

glad you've finally reached cooler temps, D1. I love alocasias and dream of having a tropical solarium with pond and alocasias, colocasias, canas and callas...and maybe some papyrus. It's frosty cold at nights here now, so tropical dreams are all I have! lol...

Yes, it's finally cooled down...and we may receive some rain in a few days (which we so badly need). It will be warming back up by the weekend. The hot weather is definitely not over! We have Oct and Nov to get through first. November is statistically the sunniest month in San Diego. We can still get temps close to 100ºF (38ºC) in November for inland San Diego. Actually, on Nov. 4th 2010 it got up to 100ºF (38ºC) in downtown San Diego.

OMG...I would be a dessicated noodle...by November I'm almost ready for winter...notice I said "almost"...ok...you can tell me to just "get over it!" I need to hear it!
11 Oct, 2012
Yes, this time of year I do feel like a dessicated noddle when it's almost 100ºF (38ºC) and the humidity is only 5%. Those are Santa Ana Wind weather conditions for you.
Today it's cool, with a few showers. However, this weekend another heat wave is suppose to start and last through next week, so the weather people say.
11 Oct, 2012
We are getting some much needed moisture as well...you have another month to go before you can expect a break...how do you stand it? Don't the Santa Ana's make people grouchy?
17 Oct, 2012
We didn't get much rain. It started getting hot again starting last Sunday. It's still hot...over the next couple of days we may be getting temps up to about 100ºF (38ºC).
The Santa Ana winds make us itchy! lol! It makes our skin so dry, we feel like a prune or dry leaf.
17 Oct, 2012
lol...itchy and grouchy...sounds like a vaudeville team! Roll on November!
21 Oct, 2012
Yes, itchy and grouchy! LOL! It was very hot last week! The last couple of days it has cooled down and is cloudy and showery. It feels great!!! :>)
Warm to hot weather is suppose to return by Wednesday or Thursday of this coming week.
22 Oct, 2012
We are supposed to get some unseasonably warm days around that time too! What is going on???
24 Oct, 2012
Not sure...however, it's not too unusual for this time of year for here in San Diego. Although, the night temps on average have been well above normal.
24 Oct, 2012
hope things are better soon. What are the ocean temps like? I believe you said that the currents off the coast of San Diego are cold? Wonder what the water temps off the Galapagos are? That's where the nino/nina's play, right?
We are to have temps up into the 20's tomorrow...(C) but who knows what the day after tomorrow will bring. The old trickster Jack Frost is not far away.
25 Oct, 2012
It sounds like nice and comfortable temps for this time of year, for you. I'm guessing you're going to be enjoying it. :>)
It's suppose to be hot tomorrow and for the next 4 or 5 days. The ocean temp is 70ºF (21ºC) which is above normal for this time of year. We do have an El Niño going on. Not sure how strong it going to be this year, though.
