I call it a hedge and my husband calls it my obsession. But look at the fluffy mousse-like texture you get when you cut it lovingly in May with your sharpest secateurs over an 8 hour period! I cut this twice a year - May and then Aug/Sept with a few snips here and there in between. I'm currently toying with the idea of creating a Knoll Gardens/Piet Oudolf tall grass explosion on the other side of the hedge. I can see the traditionalists among you shaking your heads already :)

I found them the other day on FaceBook and their use of grasses is wonderful. Really has inspired me :)
There's just gravel on the other side of the two hedges and this side of the house is South facing - so masses of potential. I've run out of space at the back. Stipa gigantea. Tempted. Hee hee.

Oooh, yes, that is truly special. You know, I've never cared for grasses and every year I sniff at the latest 'naturalistic' borders on the telly...but this year I have started to really like them! I think it is partly because of the weather. I think they would work a lot better than my roses in wet, and I also like the way they blend other plants together seamlessly, leaving no gaps in the planting. So, I've been adding some lately. I did have a stunning Stipa Gig. in the front but it was a little too successful and had to come out. The 'flowers' were falling in to the pathway and it was too close to the house and looked a little odd. But it is a fabulous grass isn't it!
