Today our Welsh poppy ( Cambrica) is flowering despite heavy frosts recently. Fantastic all year plant in yellow & orange, sowed the rarer red form earlier as it needs a freeze to action germination.

Bampy, is Welsh poppy invasive where you live? I do not think (but not 100% sure) the California poppy needs a freeze to germinate. There are bare hills just before the entrance to Los Angeles valley called Grapevine and they turn orange in the spring...because of these little beauties. It is a beautiful site when driving North in April.

Meconopsis Cambrica (Welsh poppy ) gently self seeds in the most delightful way. Not invasive. We grow eschsholzia as annuals here in the UK, no freezing required.
Check out my photos page 1 & p9-10 there-abouts for welsh poppys in my garden. It's a 'must-have' perenial in my humble opinion.

The California poppy does not need freezing temps to germinate. They grow wild here in San Diego where it never freezes.
