It's been so muddy but I went outside and dug up some Parsnips today, for Christmas dinner! After growing them for 8 months,I just hope the cook doesn't burn them again like last year!!!!

One of my favourite vegetables, but here they are only ever considered animal fodder and rarely grown at all.

I cook mine in honey too, so yummy + rosemary for extra flavour.

Mmmm - I think honey is a step too far - parsnips are already quite sweet: vegetable oil, coarse salt and black pepper and roasted on a medium heat - heaven! I'd be happy to eat them all by themselves.

I love parsnips Paul so save some for me, they taste sweeter if they are burnt .

We've just been spending a few warm sunny days out in the garden, and actually managed to find the single parsnip that grew this year - I fell backwards trying to pull it up when the top parted company from the root. When we finally unearthed it it was big but so forked we couldn't have eaten it anyway. Wonder why that was - the ground isn't stony, and past crops have been perfectly shaped. Ah well, wish us better luck this year!

I'll try not to laugh Gattina...at you falling over when you pulled it...
Maybe the soil is vey rich which can also cause forking!

Thats great no burnt offerings hehe, I enjoyed watching my grand daughter open her presents Paul that was the best christmas present of all her little face.

Oh Boy! Those look good. They aren't found in Italian shops, so I sowed 2 packets this year, and only one seedling came up. A good friend brought us a couple of packets the other day, bought from Sainsbury's and exported in hold luggage, courtesy of British airways. That and "proper" sprouts. (ours aren't big enough to harvest yet) The turkey is cooking as I write. So a proper English Christmas dinner is assured in the Gattina household! (none of that tortellini in brodo rubbish) Have a very happy Christmas!
