Commercial orchards pollinate dates manually .
Date palms are dioecious . Male and female flowers of the date palm grow on different trees, The palms are planted 50 to the acre — 49 gals and 1 guy! At the proper time, humans have to climb the male tree to collect the pollen and polinate the female plants.
The bunches of dates on female palms are later thinned and bagged or covered before ripening so that they are protected from weather and birds.

Klahanie:
It always amazes me to see miles and miles of date palms with these bags covering the flower spikes out in the Coachella Valley. Like Tugbrethil says, out near Indio seems to have the most orchards. It's about a two hour drive to Indio from San Diego.

I figured such. The Coachella Valley grows the largest amount of dates in the US.
I took many pics of date palms and posted them back in August of 2011. Like a crazy person I was out in Palm Springs in summer's extreme heat!

There are still a few orchards in the Valley of the Sun, where I live, but most of the crop in the States comes from the Coachella Valley, near the town of Indio, in southeastern California.
