they are very pretty plants but just wish they would last longer. I only ever seem to get them to survive for a little bit longer than a week.

Is this Amaryllis Vegas?

sorry Katarina no label was on the bulbs when I bought them I bought 5 and they are red ones and pink ones - looking forward to the red ones coming out as their centre is nearly black.

I bought two bulbs this week from South Africa. One red and one like this, stating its name is Vegas. But there are dozens of A., so I am not sure. They are great flowers. Looking forward to see them blooming. Do you have them inside now or in the winter garden?

They are the houseplant type Katarina, in my window bottom, they like light and a little warmth, not sure how else I should treat them, they are all going to flower, one of them was with my daughter it flowered a beautiful red before Christmas so I am hoping mine come the same.

I know them, Oliveoil, if you look on mu summer photos, you will see how big flowers I had this year. I just leave them during the winter in garage, where there is enough light but temperatures are around zero. Then in March I take them out. They usually bloom in May.

Thank you Katarina, I will look in a little while many thanks for the advice.

Hi Oliveoil, have your Amaryllis blooms opened yet? I have two plants actually in flower at present with another one about to open its enormous blooms. They will probably open tomorrow.

I took out 3 that had finished flowering this morning to put in our bedroom window.

One about to open, the pink one has finished now and the other two are nowhere near flowering. After they have finished flowering do I leave the leaves to grow on and then cut them back later on. We do not have central heating so they take ages to start off and then seem to be ages to open up, doesn't seem to bother them that it is cooler so think that is why it takes them longer to develop.

They do seem to take longer in cooler conditions which is why I leave them in the bedroom or kitchen window sills till the flowers actually begin to open.

Let the leaves grow naturally. They will also need feeding with a high potash fertilizer in a few months time. At this time of the year I give them a general all purpose fertilizer & in May I water them with tomato fertilizer. Keep them growing all summer & only stop watering them in September & let them gradually die back. The leaves may not all dry up so don't worry about them. Don't water them again until you see the new buds starting to appear in the neck of the bulb. Be careful not to leave them standing in water or they will rot. They much prefer it dry to water logged.

Thank you Balcony for that information, very useful, I will do as you say and see if I can keep them going for next season. The red one is still in the process of opening, but it is getting there as soon as it is fully open I will post a picture of it. Thank you again for your helpful advice. :O)

You can always count on me for advice besides I know of several websites you could visit for more "professional" information.

I've written several blogs on Amaryllis so you could also have a look at those for some growing info.
