Klahanie:
Ficus microcarpa 'nitidia' trees are very impressive with their huge canopies and surface roots. They are best planted in parks. There's many very large, old trees here in San Diego.

Thanks for the ID Delonix1. They are impressive.

It's Ficus microcarpa 'nitida' or retusa. They can grow to very impressive heights and widths.

Looks like some sort of magical tree.

You are right Lindak, it looks like from a fairy tale.

When you see millions around, you don't look at them as magical. lol! :>)
Many people here in San Diego dislike them because they lift up sidewalks and get into water pipes. I do love them, though!
Here' some of my Ficus species photos:

They have this one confined in this specific area but you are right, some lift the sidewalks pretty badly. I still like these incredible roots. They are as interesting as the tree itself. Or more. :-)

Yes, they are incredible trees!
If you ever get some extra time, check out some of my Ficus tree pics planted in Balboa Park. Some of the trees, like the Ficus macrophylla (Australian Banyan) are the among the largest in the state and U.S. The 73 year old Ficus watkinsiana (Watkin's Strangler Fig) located at the San Diego Zoo is the largest in the U.S. and one of the largest and in North America.

WOW!!!

Its bigger then any I've seen in California. I've never seen a F.nitida with those type of surface roots. Its sort of more like a Hawaiian climate growth tree. Midways Between there and soucal. In Hawaii,it would banyon also.
So,its plenty warm all year for you there. Bottom line- wink.

Stan,
They grow very huge here in San Diego.
I'm going to post a large F. microcarpa tonight. It's a huge tree close to where I work. There's many much larger here, though.
