I was surprised how much fruit it had growing what seemed a poor soil and harsh conditions.

Klahanie:
Papaya plants can produce very good fruit even in poor, dry soil. One thing they cannot tolerate is cold, wet soil...even in the tropics they don't like wet soil (the roots rot very easily in clay-type soils).
I have many years experience growing several varieties of papayas.
