They grow them here along the high walls (and over the walls) as security measure against brakings. They are prickly. Almost everybody has it. They look very happy here. I am sort of surprized as most are neglected. (no water no trim)

I would guess it's as widely grown there as here.
There's huge wild ones growing the freeways here in San Diego. It's one of the most widely grown vines in California. Bougainvillea is a vine that can be very neglected and grow and flower very well. In fact, it prefers to neglected for best flowering.

It looks great! Even with the very unusual cold weather here the Bougainvillea still look great and are in full bloom, also.
