My Song of India Dracaena has been in the ground for about two years. It needs a little bit of training before it gets wild. Photo taken Feb. 2, 2013.

It must be very commonly available there, just like here
It's a plant that's typically planted against a wall or house. I hope when it grows larger/taller it'll still look good.

Yes it's easy to get here, Andy. I've seen huge stands of it at the Roma Street Parklands, and it just looks absolutely spectacular!

I think I saw your photo of the large ones at the Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane.

I've been back many times since I first noticed the stand, and they've continued to look wonderful ever since. I'm sure someone must be keeping them tidy, and cutting out the old growth, as the stand never seems to look old and tired.

I remember it was very large and beautiful. I've never seen one that large here. Rancho Soledad Nursery sells 20ft tall ones, they're very expensive.

its very pretty, think it might have to be an indoor plant here! [currently 3 inches of snow on the ground!]

Yes, this plant can only be grown in tropical/subtropical climates.
In spring I'm going to cut out all the tip to promote fuller growth.

should be lovely

Yes, I got the idea to grow this plant from some I saw growing on Coronado Island (which is about a 15 minute drive from where I live).

its a beautiful leaf, and i like the way the leaves grow ~ almost like a flower

Yes, the growing points are like rosettes. When grown against a bright solid-colored wall this plant looks wonderful!

im sure you are right but i think i would like it anywhere!

I'm sure it makes a great house plant, like most Dracaena species.

i might look out for one, its very attractive

It's very attractive and can grow quite large, in time.
Here's a photo of one at Rancho Soledad Nursery in northern San Diego County. This one is in a greenhouse; however, there were even larger ones growing outdoors in gigantic boxes.

thats a beauty, its almost like bamboo in the way that those tall central stems can be seen through the leaves; interesting how some of its branches look as if they are doing their own thing ~ not a 'uniform' shape. its really lovely.
i imagine it grows slowly? I can imagine bouganvillia growing nearby ~ the colours would look good together.
i rather like its name ~ 'song of india'

Yes, it grows in all directions. It could be controlled by pruning, though. One needs a large property for the large specimens they sell at Rancho Soledad Nursery. Most of the properties around Rancho Santa Fe (where the nursery is located) are mansions. It's in the top 3 most expensive communities in the U.S.

oh dear, so on three counts i cant have this plant
1. its not warm enough here
2. my garden isnt big enough
3. im not rich enough!
15 Feb, 2013
It should be available at your nursery, it's a common plant here. LOL!
My so called information above was incorrect. Rancho Santa Fe is the 4th wealthiest community in California and 14th in the U.S. :>) So, this means you are wealthy enough to afford this plant. LOL! :>)

i shall look in the garden centres and let you know!!
16 Feb, 2013
Yes, please let know. I will be curious if it's as common as here in San Diego, CA.
17 Feb, 2013
There is a very large garden centre near me, I shall ask there.
17 Feb, 2013
Good luck! :>)
