My Firespikes shrub has dozens of flower spikes... and started blooming a couple of weeks ago. Photo taken Mar. 11, 2013.

It's very common here. Although, Ondontonema strictum - Red Firespike is even more common.

It's a very nice looking flower! Shame I couldn't grow it here on my balcony! :-(

Yes, it pretty tropical. This plant is about 14 feet tall.

It can be kept small by pruning. It would most likely grow well in your balcony during spring - fall; however, it's a tropical plant and won't take much cool or cold weather.

Then it certainly won't like my balcony! Just last weekend we had more snow & since "Spring" began we have had frosts every night & extremely cold East winds all day for the last couple of weeks. These cold winds are forecast to last through the first week in April! :-(( At least we no longer expect snow! :-))

Balcony:
I've been hearing about all the cold weather in the UK. It sounds awful! Many part of the U.S. are having horrible cold, even down to Miami, Florida it's been cold.
In Southern California, we have been basking in warm to hot, sunny weather for the last three weeks. We do need some rain, though. The rainfall is well below normal...I think we're heading back into a long drought. :>(
