I have to admit I don't like them like this, I prefer them with some branches on also, we don let ours grow like trees, ours are more like shrubs.......

They grow shrub-like here, also. This one is very tall and upright. It'll most likely branch out.

i have some that like to branch and others take a bit of encouragement....what is the tall stalk with green growth on in in the front of the picture?

Those are very tall, I mean extremely tall and old Alluaudia procera (Madagascar Ocotillo) which were donated to the San Diego Zoo from a private garden (I found this information out on the horticultural tour I took a few years back). They're an extremely tender succulent which is native to Madagascar; however, thrive at the zoo! They grow all around San Diego, but are usually not as tall as the ones at the zoo.
