Thanks Annie . . . I'm quite relieved as it had hardly any flowers last year!

WOW! I bet you are thrilled!!

Thanks Karen - it certainly brightens a dull day :)

That's a beauty - not sure I've seen one before, Sheila.

Thanks Tuesdaybear. They are a bit unusual in that the flowers come out before the leaves . . . I love another variety (called Forest Pansy I think) that Karensusan used to have, but sadly no longer :(

Thank you Brian and Terra :)

That is a beautiful tree. I bought last year Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' which has red leaves but it is still a stick in the pot and have only few blooms. I hope it will look as good as yours one day.

Thanks Klahanie. I'm sure yours will soon be a beautiful tree too: it sounds quite appealing as a 'dwarf' . . . any photos?!

16 May, 2013

Sheila, I did not know that Cercis canadensis 'forest pansy' come in "dwarf". It is considered a small tree (I think). How old is your Cercis 'siliquastrum' ? It looks so strong and well established.

16 May, 2013

Klahanie . . . I just meant that yours SOUNDS like a 'dwarf' because you said it's in a pot with few flowers. I grow bonsai from almost any tree, just by keeping the branches and roots pruned: it's fun and easy. Last year I sowed a few seed from my Cercis, and one has germinated, so I'll keep it small and see how it does.

I think the tree is about 6 or 7 years old, and hopefully won't get any bigger because you're right, Cercis tends to be sold as 'suitable for small gardens'.

I have it in the pot Sheila, but eventually I want to put it in the landscape.
I cannot believe how some of you girls can germinate plant from the seeds. I have no luck (or skill).
And bonsai is another science to me.
I hope your Cercis from the seed will prosper and one day we will see it here on GOY.

Thanks Klahanie . . . you know, there's a lot of luck involved in germination! With a tree seed, I usually pop some in compost in a pot and leave them in the cold frame, labelled, and forget about them. Then SOMETIMES there's a lovely surprise many months later :) (But there are many I've never succeeded with, including that lovely South African tree with purplish flowers whose name I can't think of!!)

Oh, do you mean Jacaranda Shiela? But I think the genus of this tree is native to southern Brazil and northern Argentina and naturalised in South Africa.
How I wish I could grow them here. But our climate is not gentle enough for them here on the Island and also too much rain for too long. We are wintering in Mexico and the place we stay is famous for them.

That's it! 'Jacaranda' . . . good thinking on your part! They are such a beautiful tree, but you are so right, it's no good thinking that we can grow them in our temperatures.

I LOVE your island - we once thought of emigrating to Vancouver, but stayed for the sake of the grandparents (I love skiing, and my husband loves sailing). But we had a holiday there after thinking about it for many years, and stayed on the west coast of your island. There is a GoY member 'Adoons' who lives on Gabriola, but she hasn't been active on this site for the last year or two.

I have a good friend who lives on Gabriola Island... but not this member. They have lots of gardeners out there and lovely garden shows. We visit the opened gardens there ones a year.
There is lots of ex-pats from UK living around here Shiela. I am positive that is why we have so many wonderful gardens around here.
