I think it might be a bee fly, Holly, a bit smaller than the humming bird hawkmoth but still lovely to have in the garden :)

I have some around as well. Great photo.

Thanks gee, I googled it and had a look, and I think your right a bee fly... the Humming bird hawk moth if fatter... it was hovering in garden so I thought it was one..... will change the name... :)))))))

I had one hovering around the blue flowers of the ajuga but just couldn't get a decent shot :(

You have to be quick dont you... :))
