Ladybird Tower

A smashing gift from son Jim, somewhere for the ladybirds to overwinter. Thing is I haven't seen any at all in the garden this year!....:o(

What a good idea ...if you had any ladybirds that is ...I've only seen a yellow one valiantly trying to rid a shrub of greenfly. I only noticed him as I was just about cut the tip of the leaves off. Unfortunately as soon as I cut off affected leaf tips the ants carry more aphids up lol:-)

I didn't know ants carried aphids on to plants - I thought they just took advantage of the ones that are there - feeding on them?
Does anyone else on Goy know anything I wonder? :)

They are natures farmers unfortunately Shirl and conscientiously husband their aphid stock, looking out for the juiciest leaves for them to suck:-)

I like that Janey It looked as if two ladybirds were finding their way in already , we have had a lot this year for some reason they like to get in the wood on the fruit cage where the wood overlaps ,last year we had loads

There seems to be plenty of everything else but no ladybirds. Well if they do turn up in your garden for winter at least they'll have a 5 star hotel to sleep in!

Yeh! Found one today, but would she heckerslike go in it! Spent ages tipping my hand this way and that and No No No, not even for a little look round, or to keep it mind for winter.......I would have thought in Ladybird world this would have been one of Kevin's Grand Designs.....:)). It would be just my luck that the ants move in instead, complete with sofas, hearth rugs, and memory foam toppers, never mind the aphid pics for the Walls!.......:(((

I'm laughing about just your luck! I have lots of ants, I've been watching them go about their buisness - facinating.(well until their running up your arms and legs) I had Lots of aphids on one of my echinacea, the ants were running up and down the stems and when I touched another flower I had about 10 or more ants run up my arm in order to protect the aphids (the ants benefit from the aphids secretion). Then one day I went to check, the aphids & ants had completely disappeared from that plant but seem to have moved 6ft to another Echinacea on the other side of the border. Mind you....how would I know if they were the same ants & aphids or not, but its strange they just left the first plant! Oh heck...I really ought to get out more!

I have seen 1.........on my sweet peas which have gone all sticky due to aphids, was that delighted to see it i didn't mind about the sticky plants. Love your bug hotel.

They are amazing creatures aren't they Helenium, I wonder if it was the human scent that made them move to a 'safer' domain? I'm like you, I'm intrigued by all the micro life and spend ages watching the goings on. Yesterday there was a very large Dragonfly patrolling up and down the garden, I'm sure it was after the butterflies, thank goodness it didn't manage to catch any!

Thanks Grandmage.....ah that sounds like a weeks food for your ladybird!
