A tall, graceful, fragile-looking flower.
Needs support in winds.

Hmm ...you may have an identity crisis on this one Mouldy! ... I think it's a Gladiolus murielae. Type that name into the Google custom search box on GoY and look at the images ... it's a stunner though ... :o)
Barbara - am still laughing at your comment - need a hole to fall into? lol!!!

Old adage, Olive...when you find yourself in a hole, neck deep, STOP digging! Lol.
So, have I got a future as a hand model or not? ;-)
I guess so, Sheila, especially in this summer's heat & sunshine. Lol.
Shirley, I'm just going with what the box said (bought from Tesco, 30 bulbs to a box) & I'm sticking to 'Classic beginner's error No 3...gullibility'. Lol.
Plus No 4...presuming, as I thought glads had mutiple flowers, which the only two I chose to plant displayed.
I'll have a decko, then rush off an 'Angry from Glasgow' (although I'll have to force the anger, 'cos it's a beautiful flower, whatever it happens to be! Lol.) letter to Tesco.

P.S.
I've just checked the box, Shirley.
Maybe we're both right.
It say's...30 Peacock Orchid.
Below, in smaller writing...Gladiolus callianthus.
Why do they have to complicate things? Lol.

Blinking Latin names get me all confused - why don't they call a spade a spade. lol.
10 Sep, 2013
You tell 'em, Olive! Lol.
This latin malarkey was dreamt up by a bod from Sweden or Norway, I believe.
He even changed his own name...translated it into latin...in the 1700's!
I can see the sense of it, however grudgingly, as common names for the same plant differed, wherever you went.
He did the same thing with us & everything else.
Why couldn't he just have gone for a few drinks & a sing-song, in his spare time, like everyone else? ;-)

Hope he isn't in your pub tonight then Mouldy or he will be lost. :O)

Gorgeous - they won't survive winter up here Mouldy. I don't know if you can lift the bulbs and dry them for next year.

Beautiful! So's the Gladiolus Callianthus.

The box said leave the corms in, Scottish, but I'm going to move them, at least.
Olive, hardly anyone was out to play.
Tuesdays are always quiet nights in pubs for some reason.
Eh, Mel?
Do you mean my hand? Lol.

I bought some of these a few years back. The label said 'Acidanthera' lol...
I take the bulbs in each winter to replant the following spring. One year they flowered late & I didn't wait for the foliage to die off but cut it off instead & last year they didn't flower. I still put them out this spring, no flowers yet but the leaves have grown well. If they don't flower this season I'll just leave them in the ground.

Hi Floral, how's things?
The foliage soaks up the sun to feed the bulb for the following year, I guess.

Good thanks, enjoying summer
Yeah, live & learn :) I did let the foliage die last fall even though there were no flowers.

Maybe you'll get lucky & the plant will produce even more blooms this year, or next, as it's survival instinct kicks in.
No, I don't think so either. Lol.

I must say you have been very ambitious with the things you are growing for first time.good for you. Love your comments about Linnaeus. I believe he was Swedish.

I'm glad you were able to provide a name.
I came across the story 20yrs ago, whilst doing forestry.
As for the planting...'fools rush in...' is the rather apt expression that comes to mind!
Thanks, though. Lol

But that's the way to do it!

The only way!

So, when I accidently plant class A drugs, I can tell the court you two told me to go for it, eh? Lol.
