In the front garage border. Flowering on much shorter stems this year, I think that's down to the long dry spell

I kept cutting ours back and now they have flowered on much shorter stems which I prefer.

I like the short stemmed ones, long stems seem to to get too leggy. I have a problem with these.... More leaves than flowers! Am I doing anything wrong?
