close up - see previous photo, I have got rid of all the small pink and white stones around the plants and I think it looks less grave like now.

Definitely. But I would add some small pine tree which you can trim regularly instead of that pot, or a water feature. Very Japan then.

It look good Denise , I like it , you could plant some low growing carpet Thyme along the edges it would spread over to soften the edges but also be easily lifted to one side if necessary plus the bees love it :o)
