how many plants do you put in each pot?

Thank you all for liking this photo & I'm pleased you like them! :-))

Jane, they aren't giant ones, just normal size for Pansies. At least that's how they look to me! Perhaps you are thinking of Violas. They have flowers only a 1/4 the size of modern Pansies.

Lynda, it's the only way I can get enough room to grow anything. I couldn't grow so much if I limited myself to just what I could grow on the balcony floor!

As most people live in big blocks of flats in Spain they have devised other means of growing plants - putting them in rings like these is very common. I did the same during the many years I gardened on balconies in Spain as well! The rings are more than 20 years old & are made of aluminium.

I also grow plants in hanging baskets & also in wall pouches - as well as the balcony floor! There is also a round table in the corner of the balcony where I also grow plants. There are even wires tied from the railings up to the balcony ceiling which have plants like Sweetpeas or Morning Glory climbing up them during the summer! No space goes unoccupied - except where it is necessary for me to walk along!

I hope so too, Pansypotter! Thanks. :-))

Fran I have put two in each pot this year as they are bigger plants but in previous years I've put three in each pot. They never seemed to mind being crowed! I only put 2 in each this year because it was almost physically impossible to get 3 in & also I couldn't afford to buy enough plants to be able to put 3 in each pot. These cost me more than double what I'd expected to pay this year. The supermarket where I normally buy the trays of plug plants haven't had any more since the first lot was sold out. Other years they have had at least 5 times more plants & have been able to sell them all.

I've seen something similar, Jane; pansies aka violas - made me wonder if one was the common name, one the formal one

Pansies & Violas are quite easy really to tell apart; Pansies have big, showy flowers, most often with black blotches on the petals, Violas on the other had are much smaller flowers, & plants, but don't usually have black blotches on their petals. You will often find that Violas also have black lines, looking rather like cat whiskers. In fact they are often sold with names like "cat face" or "Cat whiskers" as the faces often remind one of a cat's face!

I bought a box of Violas last Saturday & planted them out yesterday (Monday) in the middle one of the 3 white troughs on the balcony floor.

Look out for some photos I'll be uploading of Pansies & Violas planted yesterday on the balcony.
