Hosta Fire and Ice

Hosta Fire and Ice

My first hosta to survive over winter, now I am enamored. These buds started in August, a late year so I expect it in July usually. I love the bright foliage and now these stately blooming stems in lavender. I will post a few more pics later, like the lilies. :-)

Quite a striking plant. Those lavender blooms look like "Bleeding Hearts"

Like Bathgate says: "Quite a striking plant"! I quite agree with her! :-))

When was this photo taken? It's very unusual to see a Dicentra 'Bleeding Heart' in July or August! In the UK they generally bloom in April - May.

Thank you. It has such a bright presence. Our ice left this year end of May so late spring blooms came here in August. Late season things that survive here, like aster, seldom show a bloom unless the season is exceptionally long or starts early. The dicentra blooms all summer here, from first shoots to first frosts. Its wonderful.

Thank you Feverfew. I am so enjoying it. Hope for an earlier start to the season next year.

Jane, this little dicentra formosa is really pleasing. I'll have to spread a few more. :-)

It's a really lovely plant...striking is the word. It has such a lot of 'energy'...like it's thrusting out of the ground. :)

Thank you Karen. It really is. I wonder if these more floral focused types are more upright then the others. I already learned it grows slower. My other hosta is most certainly rounder with some down curling leaves. There are a few more of these floral variety that I want, now that I live somewhere they are surviving.

OH GT, you've caught the bug! Lol....I managed to build up a collection of about 30 last year. It all started with a 'June' that reminded me of just how stunning Hostas are, then I made friends with a lady who collects them. after that I had no chance really...I was a gonner. The only bad thing about Hostas is their disappearance during the winter months. Most of mine are in pots though, so they can be out of sight now until spring.
