i didn't know what they're supposed to look like.
there's a tiny gap between my fence and next door's, the stem is coming up in that gap. very hard to get it out - even if the stem came thorugh the gap, the roots wouldn't, unless I cut the fence - and no knowing how much of the root is under the other fence, next door

You could cut it off level with the fence. Catoneasters seed from their berries readily and it is probably entirely on its own root in an intrusive space.

I've cut them both back a bit to get to the junk hehind and between them; both stems are inside the fence, so both very gramped; they only seem to grow on one side, both to the left, for some reason

Looks like it is not in your garden Fran. Doesn't look a happy Catoneaster. Is it coming through the fence?
