Adenium obesum - Desert Rose

Hi D1, lovely photo, very attractive rose. People here in the UK would love the occasional 29 degrees. That is usually the years highest recorded temperature for us here. 20-24 degrees is about the summer norm for us, in the NW of England anyway.

It's not a true rose. It's actually related to Plumeria and Oleander (which are very common in the landscape here). It's in the Apocynaceae family.

The normal, average summer highs here in inland San Diego range from 88 - 92ºF (31 - 33ºC); however, can much higher. During the first couple of weeks of May we very hot weather with temps as high as 106ºF (41ºC). The 110ºF (43.3ºC) weather usually comes in late summer and fall.

With our very differing climates we obviously grow totally different types of plants and shrubs. I have just noticed your comment relating to Lilac. What a shame it's too hot to be able to grow and enjoy it.

Yes, we can't grow lilac, apples, cherries...and any kind of fruit which has to have a lot of chilling hours. However, with this being said: We can grow mangoes, all citrus, papayas (I have many); passion fruit; macadamia nuts; avocados; cherimoya; sapotes; bananas (I have many) and many other tropical and subtropical fruits. I have posted photos of all these on GoY in the past.

I will take a look at your photos when I have a little more time. Nice thing is, you will save a few $'s on your fruit bill, as you seem to grow a nice selection yourself. <]:-))

My neighbors give me citrus, passion fruits and the pink lemonade (variety) lemons. There's lots of avocados, macadamia nut trees and some mango trees here in my neighborhood, also.

Adenium can grow there in the UK. It's just they can't grow outside all year like here in San Diego's mild subtropical climate.
