Emerging Cicada

Emerging Cicada

I've never seen one of these right after emerging before. I guess that means the nights will be getting noisy soon.

More often than not, all I find are the old shells still attached to plants. I took this picture with my cell phone, my camera was damaged while fishing and I haven't fixed it or replaced it yet. Cicadas are kind of nasty looking bugs but I hear them a lot more than I see them.

are these the insects that take a long time to develop before becoming an adult?

I think there's one kind of insect that's a grub for about seven years before they pupate, dunno if this is one of them - to them, a cicada is just another way of producing more grubs, rather than the other way round!

Cicadas can take a long time to develop into an adult, most of the ones I see are the type that emerges every Summer but there is at least one species that emerges after 17 years.

what do they eat rkwright?

The nymphs below ground suck the juices from plant roots, the adults feed on tree foliage. Unless there are swarms of them, they usually don't do much damage. The one in this picture is a dog day cicada and they emerge every year. I looked up some of the other species and there are some that emerge after 13 years and some after 17 years. The buzzing sound they make can be as loud as 90-100 decibels (about the same as a jackhammer).

that' s amazing isn't it from such a little creature. Bees make a humming noise because of their body to wing ratio and I expect its the same for them too.
